SHAOLIN AND HEALTH

Shaolin kung fu is demonstrated as Wushu routines; a Wushu routine is composed of a group of Wushu movements performed in a set pattern. The design and composition of the movements originated in ancient China and were based on medical knowledge of the movements of the human body. The movements and routines stressed the combination of stillness and motion, balance between yin and yang, hardness and softness, and the integration of mind and body.

Yi Jin Jing is a set of traditional Chinese Tendon-Muscle Strengthening Exercises.

Shaolin Quan is famous for its “theory of six integrations,” namely, integration of hands and feet, integration of elbows and knees, integration of shoulders and hips, integration of mind and will, integration of will and vital energy, and of vital energy and strength. According to the Chinese classical philosophical idea that stresses the importance of harmony between man and nature, it is believed that movements that most agree with the natural structure of the human body are best.

The routines of Shaolin kung fu that have been handed down through generations are extremely important; they are believed to have the power to tap deep into the human body’s potential energy. Therefore, one of the added benefits of Shaolin kung fu is that it serves as a health restorative. The Yi Jin Jing (Tendon-Muscle Strengthening Exercises) and Xi Sui Jing (Bone-Marrow-Cleaning Exercises) are both well-known exercises for preserving health.
